八重山嶋江一世流刑手形 / An order of life deportation to Yaeyama Island
27.9×70.8cm。咸豊4年（1854年）9月。志喜屋里之子親雲上（御物奉行か）から八重山島在番へ宛てた文書。ペリー艦隊の一水兵（W. ボード）殺害事件の主犯者を八重山島へ終身刑（一世流刑）に処した際の送り手形。那覇住民や老女に乱暴を働き，那覇住民から礫を打たれて死亡した「ボード事件」として知られる。ペリーは犯人の引き渡しを要求するが，結局王府側の処罰に任せた。犯人として仕立てられて八重山へ流罪となったのが，カマ渡慶次である。当時の記録によれば，乱暴・狼藉を働くボードを遠巻きにしていた人々は，忍耐できずついに礫を打って死亡させ，野次馬の内，前方にいた5，6人が犯人として牢屋に入れられたという。直接の犯人を特定するのが難しい集団による犯行，というのが真相に近い（「福地家日記」咸豊4年4月22日条）。王府裁判では，通常，摂政・三司官による罪状の通達となる。ところが，本手形では「布政官」という異国船対策のために設置された臨時の官職が発給主体となっている。そのため「琉球國中山府知府之印」という，現在のところ本「手形」のみでしか知られていない特別な印章を使用している点でも興味深い文書である。（豊見山和行）
An order of life deportation to Yaeyama Island for the principal offender in the murdering of W. Board, who was a sailor on Perry's Fleet. At the time (1854), in retaliation to Board's violence towards the women and elderly, he was struck to death with stones by the citizens of Naha. This is known as the Board Incident. Perry asked for the offender to be handed over, but in the end he left punishment up to the Ryukyu Government.Tokeji, Kama was taken to be the only offender in this case. This is a very important document for understanding the Ryukyu Government's diplomatic stance during the Bakumatsu era as this order was issued with a fake official title of Fuseikan and used the stamp of Ryukyukoku Chuuzanfu chifu, which is identified to be used only in this one instance throughout history.
