琉球状
江戸時代後期の江戸幕府御家人で国学者であった屋代弘賢(宝暦8(1758)年～天保12(1841)年)が、寛政9(1797)年、桑山左衛門に宛てた書簡であることが奥書に見える。本文の差し出し人である輪池先生とは屋代弘賢の号である。この書を源直温が木版を製作し、同好の識者に配布したものと考えられる。内容は、屋代弘賢が当時の琉球という名称について、各書物を引用しながら検討をしている。当時の識者が琉球に対してどれほどの知識を共有してもっていたことがうかがわれる史料である。

This document was written by Yashiro Hirokata(1758-1841) in the late Edo period, who was gokenin vassal and classical scholar. According to the information of colophon, this document was addressed in 1797 to Kuwayama Saemon. The sender, who was mentioned in this document as "Rinchi-sensei", is Yashiro Hirokata. Minamoto Chokuon made it by woodblock printing, and gave it to the intellectuals who wish to have them. Yashiro Hirokata examined the name of Ryukyu with a citation of various references. This is an important document to know how well the intellectuals knew about Ryukyu at that time.
