本県地価ノ高キ理由調書
明治29(1896)年に、沖縄県(殊に本島)における土地売買がなぜに高額を要するものであるのかを究明するよう、祝収税部長が部下である川畑・伊地両名に対して依頼した。本史料は、それに対して作成された回答書である。明治30年前後は、地租改正事業が検討された時期でそれに伴っての依頼であったと考えられる。内容としては、沖縄県の地価が非常に高額である理由は需要と供給の不均衡があるからであると述べ、その原因として、地積に定限あること、信用の基本なること、経済思想の単純なること、儒教主義の感化に基因することの四点を挙げている。

In 1896, both Kawabata and Iji were assigned the duties to investigate the reason why the land sales contract was so expensive in Okinawa. This report was written in response. Around the time of 1897, an introduction of land and tax reform was considered in Japan. According to the document, the reason of the expensive land prices is imbalanced supply and demand attributed to the four factors as follows: parcel area limitations, fundamental social credibility, short-sighted perspectives toward economics and the influence of Confucianism.
