飼方餌付方 唐紅毛渡鳥・和鳥 集 / Compilation on How to Care for and Feed Non-native Birds and Japanese Birds

This book was completed in 1852 and written by Kanroku Hino—Satsuma domain’s small bird section—and copied by Itsuji. The cover reads Kaikata un’nun tsukekata (karakōmō wataridori wadori) shū (Compilation on How to Care for and Feed Non-Native Birds and Japanese Birds). The first part is titled Kaikata ezukekata-bu jōnomaki (Keeping and Feeding Methods, Volume One). It describes how to care for, feed, identify, and treat diseases in small birds as learned from Futenma Pēchin, a Ryukyuan who was instructed by avian veterinarian Mèng Báijiǔ from Fuzhou, China. The second part is titled Karakōmō wataridori shū (Compilation of Non-Native Birds) and describes how to care for Red-crowned crane, peafowl, Society finches, golden pheasants, and sandpipers. There is also mention of the red-whiskered bulbul, a migratory bird from the Ryukyus Islands. It includes drawings of birds in color as well. Finally, the third part is about Japanese birds. There is little infomation available about the avian veterinarian Futenma Pēchin.
