解説

小禄親方良恭(三司官、1839～1847年任職)から島津家の家老衆へ宛てた書状である。内容は、「昨年、島津少将から鰹節八十本の贈与を受け、誠にもって有り難き仕合わせである。その御礼を申し上げたいので、家老の皆様がたへ愚札(書状)を差し上げた次第である」というものである。琉球国王を始め摂政・三司官などの王府高官と薩摩藩主および家老らとの進物のやり取りは頻繁であった。また、鰹節は高級な贈答品として用いられていた。

Description

This is a letter written by Oroku Oyakata Ryōkyō, who served as a sanshikan (top senior official of Ryukyu) from 1839-1847, addressed to a top-ranking official of the House of Shimazu. It includes Oroku Oyakata’s kaō (handwritten monogram), and the content of the letter can be summarized as, “I received a gift of eighty dried bonito flakes from Major General Shimazu last year. I am truly grateful for the gift. I would like to express my gratitude by sending a letter to all the retainers of the house.” The exchange of gifts between Ryukyu’s royal government officials (including the King, regents and sanshikan) and lords and retainers of Satsuma domain was frequent. In addition, dried bonito flakes were considered a luxury gift.
