明治廿六〔年〕、八〔月〕 大嶋紀行 / Travel Account of Hirasawa in Ōshima, August 1893
本資料の著者平澤金之助は、1868年に埼玉県菖蒲町に生まれ、高等師範学校を卒業後には中学校の教員や校長を歴任した人物である。本資料は平澤が奄美へ滞在した際に見聞した内容をもとに記されている。その項目は、奄美諸島の地誌からはじまり、「嶋人の衣服容貌等のこと」「食物等のこと」「家屋等のこと」「殖産上の事」「動植物のこと」「雑事」「大嶋名瀬地方の言葉」で構成されており、内容は生活から自然、言葉まで多岐にわたる。また、「雑事」では奄美の教育状況についても言及しており、内地に比べて就学率が低いこと、中でも女子就学率の低いことを指摘している。
HIRASAWA Kinnosuke, 1868, the Saitama Prefecture-born author was graduated from the Higher Normal School. He worked as a teacher and principal of a junior high school. This document is based on what he observed during his sojourn in Ōshima (Amami islands). It begins with the topography of the Amami islands and comprises of the following sections: "clothing and appearance of the indigenous people," "food and other related matters," "housing and other related matters," "production and other related matters," "reginal flora and fauna," "miscellaneous matters about this area," and "dialect of the Ōshima-Naze area.” The educational situation of Amami islands is also remarked in the "miscellaneous matters about this area" section. The author indicated Amami Islands had a lower school attendance rate in comparison to other areas of mainland Japan, especial the girls.
