解説

『南島紀事』は、明治19(1886)年に刊行されたもので、内編(上・中・下の三冊)と外編(乾・坤の二冊)からなる。前者は後藤敬臣がまとめ、後者は西村捨三(1843～1908、四代目沖縄県令)が著したものとなっている。西村が沖縄県令として在任中に各地の民情視察を行い、帰任後、稿本にまとめたものである。日本の南端に当る沖縄の軍事的重要性などを説いている。乾之巻は、明代から島津侵入事件にかんしての内容をまとめている。

Description

"Nanto Kiji"was published in 1886, consists of three sections of Naihen and two sections of Gaihen. Naihen was compiled by Goto Takaomi and Gauhen was compiled by Nishimura Sutezo (The 4th governor of Okinawa prefecture during 1843-1908 ). He traveled about in order to inspect the people's
actual living conditions in Okinawa when he was the governor. After he was transfered back to Japan, he published the book in which he stressed a
military significance of its geographical features located in southermost in Japan.
