寛政二年八年琉球人来聘 / The arrival of Ryukyuans in 1790 and 1796

A record of the Ryukyuan missions of 1790 and 1796, edited in Japan. The editor and the completion date are unknown. It is a rare book which can be found only in the Sakamaki/Hawley Collection. The first half is about the 1790 mission, and the latter half is about the 1796 mission. There is a table of contents in the beginning. It includes: a list of full names of the envoys and other attendants, a list of tributes, the program of musical performances, the order of the people in the procession going to the shogun's castle, etc. On the title page and the title strip on the cover page is a signature including the word "Ken'eirō," which is supposedly an ownership stamp of Tokugawa Narimasa, the third head of the Tayasu-Tokugawa family.
