南島史考（琉球ヲ中心トシタル） / Thoughts on the History of Southern Islands

Compiled by the nongovernmental educational committee of Ōshima gun and issued by Kobayashi Saburō. Published in 1931. This is a record of a lecture given by Iha Fuyū at Koniya elementary school on July 1st, 1917. In the lecture, Iha argued for a view of Ryukyuan history that is built on his linguistic analysis and the theory that Japanese and Ryukyuans shared common ancestry (Nichiryū dōso ron). Iha Fuyū spoke about the history of the Southern Islands (Nantō) and about phonetics. At the same event, Higa Shunchō, who was at that time a journalist with Okinawa Mainichi Shimbun, gave a lecture about Esperanto. Iha Fuyū wrote a several-page introduction which he entitled “In Place of a Preface,” (Jo ni kaete) and Kobayashi Saburō, chairman of the nongovernmental educational committee of Ōshima gun, wrote a brief, more conventional preface. Takeshima Jun (from Shodon, on a neighboring island) added a third preface, “A Short Course on the History of the Southern Islands – and background on the publication of this book” (Nantōshi no kōshū to honsho insatsu ni tsuki kei'i).(Updated on November 4, 2022)
