宮古島の歌 / Songs of Miyako Island

This is one of the copies of Miyakojima no Uta, edited by Tajima Risaburō. Tajima was a Japanese language teacher at Okinawa Prefecture Jinjō Middle School between 1893 and 1897. During his stay in Okinawa, he collected a huge number of songs and verses of Miyako Island, and edited Vol.1 and Vol.2 of Miyakojima no Uta (owned by University of the Ryukyus Library, the Iha Collection). This book is a re-edited version of these with some word notations added. It is a privately made book, supposedly completed between 1925 and 1935. According to some notes left in the book, it was "designed by Tarū Kabira Chōshin," and was "owned by Higa." It contains 48 Miyako songs called ayagu, 48 songs called tōgani, 3 songs sung at the time of tug-of-war called āgo, 6 songs called Tarama shongane, 5 songs sung after the tug-of-war ended, 21 āgo songs of Ikema Island, and 7 children songs.Refer to "Hawai Daigaku Hōrei Bunko Zō Miyakojima no Uta Goi Sakuinshū" (Okinawa Bunka, vol.69, October, 1987), written by Shinzato Kōshō, for more information.
