琉球人方御長持御差物請帳 / Baggage carriage log for Ryukyuan envoys

Title: Ryūkyūjin hō onnagamochi onsashimono ukechō (Baggage carriage log for Ryukyuan envoys).This is the original of a log book regarding the Ryukyuan procession to Edo in 1832. It can be found only in the Sakamaki-Hawley Collection. This is an account book of the type kept by people called sairyō (supervisor) and ninsoku (employed laborers) when they carried the belongings and baggage of Ryukyuan envoys. It describes the tributes; the baggage of the Sangikan (The Three Senators), the Ryūkyūkan Kurahō (Ryūkyūkan Finance Supervisor), and the Satsuma Domain attendants; names of ninsoku who carried whose baggage, the amount of pay, etc. (Yokoyama Manabu, Ryūkyūkoku Shisetsu Torai no Kenkyū, pp.336-337). On every page, there are multiple date stamps ranging from 28th to 15th, which probably indicates confirmation that they actually carried items on those dates. This log was probably used during this 1832 procession, which was started from Fushimi on October 28, and ended in Edo on November 16. (Updated on August 12, 2015)
