大島筆記 上 / Ōshima notes, vol. 1

Written by Tobe Yoshihiro, who was a Confucian scholar from Tosa Domain (present-day Kochi Prefecture). A copy (the completion date is unknown). "Ōshima" refers to the present Ōshima (Island) in Sukumo City, Kochi Prefecture. In 1762, a Ryukyuan tribute ship, supposed to be heading to Satsuma, drifted to Kashiwa Island in Tosa Domain and then was towed to Ōshima. This book is a record of the interview of Ryukyuan envoys conducted by Tobe then. A summary of this book can be found in Okinawa Daihyakka Jiten (Okinawa Encyclopedia). Also, a summary and a modern Japanese print transcription (honkoku) based on another copy can be found in Nihon Shomin Seikatsu Shiryō Shūsei (Collection of Sources on Japanese Life, Vol.1, 1968). The first volume contains a name list of the 52 drifters, the details on this incident (how it happened, etc.), a brief summary of the Ryukyu's situation, etc.(Updated on December 2, 2015)
