大島筆記 附録 / Ōshima notes, appendix

Written by Tobe Yoshihiro, who was a Confucian scholar from Tosa Domain (present-day Kochi Prefecture). A copy (the completion date is unknown). "Ōshima" refers to the present Ōshima (Island) in Sukumo City, Kochi Prefecture. In 1762, a Ryukyuan tribute ship, supposed to be heading to Satsuma, drifted to Kashiwa Island in Tosa Domain and then was towed to Ōshima. This book is a record of the interview of Ryukyuan envoys conducted by Tobe then. A summary of this book can be found in Okinawa Daihyakka Jiten (Okinawa Encyclopedia). Also, a summary and a modern Japanese print transcription (honkoku) based on another copy can be found in Nihon Shomin Seikatsu Shiryō Shūsei (Collection of Sources on Japanese Life, Vol.1, 1968). The third volume contains "Furoku" (Appendix), which includes some drawings of Ryukyuans' clothes, tribute ships, and tea and sake sets as well as Ryukyuan verses and Japanese waka verses composed by the Ryukyuans.(Updated on December 4, 2015)
