中山伝信録 巻一、巻二 / Record of transmitted facts of Chūzan, vol. 1 & 2

Written by Xu Baoguang (Jpn., Jo Hokō). A Niyūsai print made in Edo, and published in 1721. Consists of four volumes with a folding book case (combined contents of six volumes into four). The Frank Hawley's ownership stamp can be found. This volume contains the contents of the first and second volumes of the original. It describes the two ships of Chinese envoys, the duties of the crew, the routes, voyage logs, the methods of measuring time, the methods of reading the wind, divine prophecies from Tenpi (the Goddess of the Sea) in answer to prayers, the mystic formulas recited during the ritual of worshipping the sea god, Tenshikan (name of the compound where Chinese envoys stayed); Sōgenji Temple, yusai (memorial service for the last king); the investiture (sappō, or sakuhō); and welcoming banquets. Some dots in red ink can be found in some parts of the text. There are also some notes "Owned by Hiruya" and "Wada Akisato," written by hand.(Updated on January 12, 2016)
